In late-1980s Bulgaria, a clever and eccentric young man, Batko Stamenov, is recruited by the secret police to spy on a group of intellectual dissidents. But when he is abruptly discarded, he takes matters into his own hands—creating a fake espionage network, fabricating reports, and deceiving both real agents and informants. As his elaborate web of lies spirals out of control, Batko navigates a world of paranoia, manipulation, and absurdity, blurring the lines between reality and illusion in this darkly comic spy thriller.
Despite the lack of heavy visual effects sequences, The Color of the Chameleon presented a few interesting challenges. Making modern Sofia look as it did in the 1970s was quite tricky, given our limited VFX budget. The final ship sequence was filmed in a studio and digitally enhanced.
